Enabling cellular therapies, the therapeutics of the future

Cell therapy can be defined as the administration of cells for the prevention or treatment of medical disorders. The applications of cell therapy are quite diverse and can be to replace, repair or enhance the function of damaged or dysfunctional cells, tissues or organs. In addition, cells can be used to influence the immune response as is the case of cellular cancer vaccines. The cells perform their therapeutic effect by secreting therapeutic substances, replacing damaged or lost tissues, forming connections, providing structural support or targeting the immune response to tumors. Therapeutic cells can be obtained from the patient (autologous), from a donor (allogeneic) or from another species (xenogeneic) and may be selected, multiplied, pharmacologically treated and/or genetically altered ex vivo. There are many advantages to using cells, as opposed to drugs or organ transplants, for therapeutic purposes.

Cells are the theraputics of the future because:

  • They are READILY AVAILABLE and can be harvested, frozen and banked
  • They perform MORE THERAPEUTIC FUNCTIONS than drugs
  • They are NOT TOXIC unless they are programmed to be
  • They can CURE disease and chronic disorders

In order for cell therapy to realize its full potential for the treatment of diabetes, the repair of damaged heart tissue, the delivery of genes, the treatment of cancer or myriad other uses, certain advances must be made. Morphogenesis is developing technologies which will enable the cell therapy industry by crafting new and more specific ways to identify stem cells, a more efficient and accurate means of cell separation, new growth factors to expand the number of stem cells without them losing their vital stem cell characteristics as well as methods to manage the recipient's immune response once the cells have been administered.

There are myriad chronic disorders which are currently being treated symptomatically.
Cell therapies target the disorder, not the symptoms, and may ultimately provide a cure.
