Morphogenesis Wins PACT Translational Grant
Baylor College will perform a key piece of research for Morphogenesis in preparation of its PhI/II ImmuneFx clinical trial with funding from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Production Assistance for Cellular Therapies (PACT) is a contract manufacturing program of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) aimed at helping investigators develop novel somatic cell therapy products. PACT offers assistance in translational development, scale up and contract manufacturing of cell therapy products intended for use in Phase I to III human clinical studies. These activities are contracted to three GTP/GMP manufacturing facilities: Baylor College of Medicine Center for Cell and Gene Therapy (BCMCGT), the University of Minnesota's Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics Facility and the University of Pittsburgh's Cellular Product Laboratory/Gene Therapy Laboratory/Immunologic Monitoring Laboratory and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Laboratory. The NHLBI is responsible for organizing and providing support for the PACT program.
Lawman Lab Recieves Hyundai Grant 2nd Year in a Row
For the second year in a row, Dr. Michael Lawman has been awarded a grant from the Hyundai Motor Corporation for his research in children's cancers. A $35,000 check was delivered as part of the "Hope on Wheels" festivities held at the entrance of the St. Joseph's Children's Hospital on June 17, 2009. During the ceremony, pediatric cancer patients from St. Joseph's Children's Hospital got all painted up and "down and dirty" so they could add their handprint to the Hyundai SUV brought to the Hospital by the local Hyundai dealers. To these kids, this was a chance to get out of their hospital bed and away from all the needles and tubes and feel like they were contributing some-thing to the fight against a disease that they know all too well. "Getting the upper hand" on cancer is a tough road to navigate. Many years of effort have been made in trying to understand the disease and then to fight it. In some cases, much progress has been made--foremost among these are the childhood cancers. In other cases, it seems as though there is no hope in sight. It is through efforts such as the Hyundai Corporation and a handful of dealers that eventually, the destination will be reached.
